“Why India’s Roads Turn Every Trip into a Traffic Lottery”

You head to a picturesque hill station for a weekend getaway, seeking respite from the daily grind of traffic. However, a Kunwar Yatra is jamming the highway with caravans blasting loud music, leaving you exhausted after just a few hours of accumulated joy.

Next, you embark on a religious trip, a 200-kilometre journey that should take no more than four hours. But overnight construction work has caused a diversion through a single-lane kutcha road, trapping you in a traffic jam.

Then, you attend a corporate retreat, immersing yourself in luxury for two days. The group tour in a high-tech bus is filled with laughter, gaana bazaana, and pure masti. But as the bus slows down, someone checks the Google Map and discovers a 45 minutes jam ahead near a river ghat. People are taking dips to observe a holy occasion.

Is there a normal time to travel in peace and with a guaranteed time on the road? Why is there such uncertainty once you step out of your house? Is it the infrastructure gap, the unmanageable crowds, or is it simply me overreacting to the normalcy in India?

A mistake thats been mainstreamed

From a linkedin post

_____________________

You’re about to make a $200k mistake on your first data hire. Your first hire shouldn’t be technical. It should be strategic.

The CEO says: “We need to be data-driven.”

The CTO agrees: “We should hire a Data Scientist.”

So they do.

PhD. Brilliant. Technical wizard.

They join, ask for data… and walk straight into chaos.

Three CRMs with conflicting definitions.

Revenue numbers that don’t match Finance.

Dashboards that contradict every meeting.

Six months later, they’re spending 100% of their time cleaning up the past instead of building the future.

By month nine, they quit.

You’re back at zero - with a bigger mess and a smaller budget.

Here’s the blunt truth:

You don’t have a data problem.

You have a sequencing problem.

You started by hiring technical people before defining strategic direction.

That’s like hiring construction workers before drawing the blueprint.

Here’s what you should’ve done instead:

1. Define the Business Problem Before the Role

Most leaders start with:

“We need dashboards.”

“We need a data warehouse.”

Wrong starting point.

The right question is:

“Where are we losing money, time, or credibility because of bad data?”

That’s the anchor.

Until you can quantify that cost, every technical hire is just busywork.

2. Hire the Strategist Before the Builders

Your first hire shouldn’t be a Data Engineer or someone Specialized.

It should be a Strategic Data Lead, or someone who can connect business goals to what the data team actually builds.

Their job isn’t to code.

It’s to define the map before you start driving.

In the first 90 days, they should:

Interview execs and department heads.

Quantify which data problems cost the most money.

Align on definitions.

Prioritzie clear next steps

Build a 90-day roadmap tied to ROI.

That roadmap will tell you who to hire next, and who not to.

3. Align Hires to ROI, Not Titles

If your biggest gap is broken pipelines → hire an Engineer.

If the problem is metric chaos → hire an Analyst or BI Developer.

If it’s governance → get an Architect.

But only after the roadmap exists.

Hiring a Data Scientist without strategyis like deploying AI on top of bad Excel sheets expensive, slow, and guaranteed to fail.

4. Measure Data Team Success in Business Outcomes

Stop celebrating activity, “We built 10 dashboards.”

Change to "Reduced fuel cost per shipment by 8%"

5. Sit under where best

Hot take: It doesn't matter where your data team sits.

Seen it all work from IT, to COO to CEO.

Put it where it brings the biggest impac

Here’s the formula I’ve seen work repeatedly:

Strategy first → Tools second → Team third.

That order alone can save you 6–12 months and hundreds of thousands in cost.

If your first data hire is technical, you’ll get deliverables.

If your first data hire is strategic, you’ll get results.

Big difference.

Internet - written in 2001

INTERNET - HOW IT  AFFECTED MY LIFE

The world of fairy tales offers lot of wonders - the most exciting of them - the magic

mirror that was used by the tantriks to find out the most sought after girl on earth. Well. I

used to wish I had one too to find out my dream boy during the teens.

Later on the priorities started changing. The need for a magic mirror grew leaps and

bounds. The requirements varied from finding out a simple definition of a complicated

economic concept to getting in touch with the latest in fashion scenario. Its like the desire

to know everything and anything under the sun that's happened/ happening yet to

happen. Whatever may be the topic, the stretched out search used to, sort of, kill the

passion. The numerous newspapers/ various magazines/ abundant libraries/ plentiful tv

channels do not seem to suffice my quest for knowledge.

I used to dream of a

mechanism/ technology that could make my life simpler like the magic mirror with

instantaneous results.

Then there's a sudden ray of hope! It is there… It is very much available… It's the

existence of the INTERNET! The brain child of the US defence and university folks that

has grown up and taking shape. The western world have already started using it in their

day to day life just like any other communication device. To put it in simple words, it

simply connects the entire knowledge base across the orb, if we can do away with the

mechanics. Its amazing.

I don't exactly remember how long it took for me to be with it after knowing about it. But

the most happening thing had happened in my life. The eternal stuff of info is now just a

mouse click or a few key strokes away. And its not limited to only the information. It

knows no boundaries. It offers assorted services. There's entertainment.. there's

commerce there's communication. there's support.. there's everything that I ever

needed and also certain things I never required.

Slowly I have transformed from being a gawk to a geek. The mere grasp of the incredible

tool started captivating me. Now I use it for the updates of daily news tailored to my

taste/ get to know the developments in technology that intrigue me/ browsing thro' the

kiddie stuff like mathstories for my daughter/ keep in touch with my friends 'n relatives

scattered across the globe / to chat my lonesome blues away and well. the list is endless.

But for the internet, most of these things would have costed me a fortune and involve he!l

lot of a trouble. Thanks to INTERNET.

No.. I cant stop here. By saying sheer thanks is not what I want to end up with. I want to

be a part of it. I want to contribute my share to it. I want to be engulfed by it. I know how

but I'm not sure where and when. Is it now and from here?

Transfer musings

Glad for you. You will be nearer home. All gaps are eventually filled but Accounts, GAD and Skills will miss a really dynamic, result oriented, incredible leader like you. Wish you the very best!

I am really happy for you ma'am

And also sad at the same time after listening to your transfer news..Don't go, ma'am

We hardly get true leaders like you ...

You are our source of inspiration.. and I get positive vibes from you for work in right direction.

With u I learnt the difference between working for mere disposal of cases and working for disposal of cases in a rightful manner

I have always seen you standing towards the right side despite things and environment being super challenging for you ..

You do 'You'😘 and that's the best

Congratulations ma'am. But not a good news for us, specifically for me.

Under your able guidance ma'am!

You will be dearly missed by the team. Last evening when i broke the news of your transfer, it was with a set of mixed feelings. I was happy for you but extremely upset for myself. Since this is an official group, so i would only talk about your professional ethics and dedication. So i am not talking about the personal close bond that we share, you have also inspired me a lot at the work place. As they say that a leader leads by example, you have always been very punctual, dedicated and hardworking mentor for all of us. The way you used to motivate us and enlighten us with your positive one liners was commendable. The doors of both your cabin and your heart was open for one and all. During your stint here,  you took HR initiatives for many of us that helped some get promotions and others get their long due increments. You were always so vocal about everything that bothered your team. You took stand for us like no one has ever done before. In you, we found a guide, a mentor and also a friend.

You will be dearly, immensely and intensely missed by the team!

Saying this out of own selfish reasons, please kindly consider a representation and stay back here this year to try for your home state the ensuing year!

Love & Regards

Team GAD & Accounts

After reading a friend’s post on Chikkadapally movie theatres’ I too felt like writing my own nostalgic experience on movie watching during my childhood. Here it goes….

******
